About Edward Bulwer Lytton

Edward Bulwer Lytton (1803-1873) was a prolific English novelist, playwright, and politician, best known for his historical novel The Last Days of Pompeii. Born into an aristocratic family, Lytton’s literary career began with the publication of his first novel, Falkland, in 1827. He achieved widespread acclaim with works such as Pelham, Rienzi, and The Last Days of Pompeii, which vividly depicts the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Lytton’s contributions to literature extend beyond his novels; he also coined famous phrases like “the pen is mightier than the sword” and “it was a dark and stormy night.” In addition to his literary achievements, Lytton served as a Member of Parliament and held various political offices, including Secretary of State for the Colonies. His diverse body of work and influence on both literature and politics have left a lasting legacy.
