About Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows

Mary Ann Shaffer (1934-2008) and Annie Barrows are the co-authors of the beloved novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Mary Ann Shaffer, a librarian and editor, conceived the idea for the novel after visiting Guernsey in the 1970s. Unfortunately, due to her declining health, she was unable to complete the book. Her niece, Annie Barrows, an accomplished author in her own right, stepped in to finish the manuscript. The novel, set in post-World War II England, explores the impact of the German occupation on the residents of Guernsey through a series of letters. The book has been praised for its charming characters, historical accuracy, and heartwarming narrative. Shaffer and Barrows’ collaborative work has captivated readers worldwide and has been adapted into a successful film, further cementing its place in contemporary literature.
