About Charlotte Brontë

Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) was an English novelist and poet, best known for her classic novel Jane Eyre. Born in Thornton, Yorkshire, she was the third of six children in the Brontë family, which included her equally famous sisters, Emily and Anne Brontë. Charlotte’s early life was marked by tragedy, including the deaths of her mother and two elder sisters. Despite these hardships, she pursued her education and later worked as a teacher and governess. Brontë’s literary career began under the pseudonym Currer Bell, a strategy she employed to avoid the gender biases of her time. Her debut novel, Jane Eyre, published in 1847, was an immediate success and is celebrated for its innovative narrative style and complex exploration of themes such as social class, sexuality, and morality. In addition to Jane Eyre, Charlotte wrote several other novels, including Shirley and Villette, which further established her as a leading literary figure of the Victorian era.
