About Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin

Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin (1856-1923) was an esteemed American educator and author, best known for her classic children’s novel, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Born in Philadelphia, Wiggin dedicated much of her early career to the education and welfare of children, founding the first free kindergarten in San Francisco. Her literary works, characterized by their warmth and insight into human nature, have left an indelible mark on American literature. In addition to Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Wiggin authored numerous other beloved books, including The Birds’ Christmas Carol and Mother Carey’s Chickens. Her contributions to both education and literature continue to be celebrated and cherished by readers and educators around the world.
