Virginia Hamilton (1936-2002) was a pioneering author and one of the most distinguished writers of children’s literature. She is best known for her novel M.C. Higgins, The Great, which won the Newbery Medal, the National Book Award, and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, making her the first African American author to receive these prestigious honors. Hamilton’s work often explored African American folklore, history, and culture, bringing diverse narratives to the forefront of children’s literature.
