Yann Martel (born June 25, 1963) is a Canadian author best known for his award-winning novel Life of Pi. Born in Salamanca, Spain, to Canadian parents, Martel spent his early years traveling across the globe, an experience that profoundly influenced his writing. Life of Pi, published in 2001, tells the extraordinary story of a young Indian boy who survives a shipwreck and shares a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger.
