About Epictetus

Epictetus (c. 50-135 AD) was a prominent Stoic philosopher whose teachings have profoundly influenced Western thought. Born a slave in Phrygia (modern-day Turkey), Epictetus gained his freedom and became a respected teacher in Rome before relocating to Nicopolis in Greece. His discourses, as recorded by his student Arrian, and his handbook, the Enchiridion, encapsulate his philosophy of inner freedom, resilience, and ethical living. Epictetus emphasized the importance of focusing on what is within our control and accepting what is not, a principle that has resonated through the ages. His works, including Discourses and Selected Writings, continue to be essential readings for those interested in Stoicism and personal development.
