About Lew Wallace

Lew Wallace (1827-1905) was an American lawyer, Union general in the American Civil War, politician, and author, best known for his historical novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Born in Brookville, Indiana, Wallace had a diverse career that spanned law, military service, and diplomacy, including serving as the governor of the New Mexico Territory and as U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire. His literary masterpiece, Ben-Hur, published in 1880, became one of the best-selling American novels of the 19th century and has been adapted into several successful films. Wallace’s contributions to literature and his multifaceted career have left a lasting legacy in American history and culture.
