About Charlotte Brontë

Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) was an English novelist and poet, best known for her classic novel Jane Eyre. Born in Thornton, Yorkshire, Brontë was the third of six children in a literary family. Along with her sisters Emily and Anne, she initially published her works under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell to avoid the gender biases of the time. Jane Eyre, published in 1847, is celebrated for its innovative narrative style and its exploration of themes such as social class, sexuality, religion, and feminism. The novel’s strong, complex heroine and its critique of Victorian society have cemented Brontë’s place in literary history.
