About Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

Mary Ann Shaffer (1934-2008) and Annie Barrows are the co-authors of the beloved novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Mary Ann Shaffer, a former librarian and editor, conceived the idea for the book after visiting Guernsey in the 1970s. Unfortunately, due to her declining health, she was unable to complete the manuscript and enlisted the help of her niece, Annie Barrows, an accomplished author known for her children’s series Ivy and Bean. Together, they crafted a heartwarming and poignant story set in post-World War II England, which explores themes of friendship, resilience, and the power of literature. The novel has garnered widespread acclaim and has been adapted into a successful film, continuing to touch the hearts of readers and viewers around the world.
