Paul Kalanithi (1977-2015) was a neurosurgeon and writer whose poignant memoir, When Breath Becomes Air, has touched the hearts of readers around the world. Born in New York and raised in Arizona, Kalanithi pursued degrees in English literature, human biology, and history and philosophy of science and medicine from Stanford University and the University of Cambridge before earning his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine. His remarkable journey from literature to medicine was marked by a deep commitment to understanding the human condition. Diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer during the final year of his neurosurgical residency at Stanford, Kalanithi turned to writing to explore his experiences with illness and mortality.
